Gate Eleven is a self made brief used as a vehicle to develop my Revit skills. 4 Derngate is currently functioning as mixed used commercial space comprising of a ground floor bar and beauty salon on the upper floors. The project aims to convert the property to a multi-storey bar inspired by the Space Age.

4 Derngate is located in the centre of Northampton, directly opposite the town’s Guildhall. The property is situated in a prime trading location within a parade of retail units. Our client, Gate Eleven, has acquired the entirety of the property with plans to create a bar that can compete with others in the area. We are collaborating with the client to design and oversee the project.

Gate Eleven wants their new multi-storey bar to have a unique identity inspired by the Space Age. This themed bar needs to take influence from the design style that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s. The client is open minded to colours, designs and layout assuming there is direct influence from the design period.

The Space Age was a style that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s and was deeply influenced by new discoveries in space exploration. Characterised by sleek forms and futuristic aesthetics, it embodied a forward-looking vision. The movement looked to create an immersive sensory experience, that echoes the possibilities of the cosmos. The style stood as a bold contrast to the restrained approach of traditional design and simplicity of modernism. Designers pushed beyond conventional boundaries to explore a new realms of creativity. This was fueled by society’s optimism about the future.

A bar is a place to be seen. Because of this, the stairs were placed centrally to be the protagonist of the space. This feature will emphasise the idea that a bar is where people dress to impress, be impressed and meet new faces.
